WASHINGTON, D.C. – One year after the implementation of President Trump’s Federal Law Enforcement Surge in the District, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced significant declines in crime rates across the city. The initiative, which increased federal law enforcement resources and aimed at addressing violent crime, has proven effective in enhancing public safety in neighborhoods throughout Washington, D.C.
According to U.S. Attorney Pirro, the past year has seen a 45 percent drop in homicides, a 64 percent reduction in carjackings, and a 33 percent decrease in robberies. Additionally, motor vehicle thefts have plummeted by 53 percent. “We’ve seen firsthand how sustained, coordinated law enforcement efforts can make an impact,” Pirro stated, citing a 67 percent increase in prosecution efforts since she took office.
In the past year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged 16,724 cases in D.C. Superior Court, marking a substantial rise in the number of cases brought forward. The office’s “no paper” rate, which indicates cases that have not been prosecuted, has decreased by 76 percent, signaling enhanced efficiency in the criminal justice process. Currently, approximately 24,000 criminal cases are pending in D.C. Superior Court.
The surge’s success is attributed to close collaboration among federal agencies, local law enforcement, and the Metropolitan Police Department. The creation of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force has focused on priority public safety challenges, including violent crime, property offenses, and vandalism. Through these efforts, nearly 2,000 illegal firearms have been seized from the streets of Washington, D.C., reflecting a concerted effort to combat gun violence and enhance community safety.
