MPD Investigating Sumner Road Pedestrian Fatality

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is actively investigating a tragic pedestrian fatality that occurred early Sunday morning in Southeast Washington, DC. The incident took place around 12:27 a.m. on July 5, 2026, in the 1200 block of Sumner Road.

Officers from the Seventh District responded to reports of a crash and discovered an adult male suffering from critical injuries in the roadway. Emergency medical services from DC Fire and EMS transported the victim to a local hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The decedent has been identified as 63-year-old Ricky Marshall, a resident of Southeast DC.

According to preliminary investigations, Mr. Marshall was crossing the street when he was struck by an unknown vehicle traveling eastbound on Sumner Road. Following the collision, the vehicle fled the scene before authorities arrived. The MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is leading the inquiry into this incident.
