Dion Phelps, a 29-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been indicted for the murder of his 7-month-old son, King Phelps, following an incident in March 2023. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced that Phelps faces charges including first-degree felony murder, two counts of first-degree cruelty to children, two counts of assault, and one count of making felony threats against a witness. The arraignment was presided over by the Honorable Todd Edelman.
According to evidence presented by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on March 16, 2023, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of an unconscious infant at an address on Morris Road, Southeast. Upon arrival, they found King unresponsive, with Phelps and the leaseholder of the apartment present. Emergency Medical Services attempted life-saving measures, but the infant was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner later determined that King suffered blunt force injuries to the torso.
Phelps was arrested on October 23, 2023, and has been in custody since that time. The investigation into the case is being conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emma McArthur.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
