WASHINGTON, D.C. – Christopher Murphy, a 37-year-old man from Phoenix, Arizona, was sentenced today to 100 months in prison for distributing child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. This sentencing, which took place in U.S. District Court, underscores the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation within the District and beyond.
Murphy pleaded guilty on March 16, 2026, to one count of distribution of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) before Judge Royce C. Lamberth. In addition to his prison term, Murphy has been ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender. The severity of the case has drawn attention to the prevalence of online child exploitation, a pressing issue affecting communities nationwide, including in Washington, D.C.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Murphy utilized encrypted messaging applications such as Signal and Telegram to both distribute and receive CSAM, including materials involving very young children. He was found to be an active participant in multiple Signal groups dedicated to the sharing of such materials and even hosted Zoom meetings to engage with other individuals involved in similar activities. Law enforcement officials discovered thousands of disturbing images and videos on Murphy’s devices following his arrest, highlighting the extensive nature of his criminal activities.
This case was investigated by the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard Kelley. It forms part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, aimed at protecting children from online exploitation. The initiative mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to locate and prosecute offenders while also working to rescue victims of abuse.
