(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser marked a significant milestone today with the grand reopening of the Rosedale Outdoor Pool at the Rosedale Recreation Center in Ward 7. The beloved pool, originally opened in 1934 and rebuilt in 2012, has undergone a $6.8 million renovation, expanding its footprint by more than 1,400 square feet and enhancing the community’s recreational offerings.
“Our outdoor pools are very popular. This summer, our pools have already welcomed more than 236,000 visitors. And now residents have one more option here at Rosedale,” stated Mayor Bowser during the celebration. The newly renovated pool features six swimming lanes tailored for competitive swimming, which will increase capacity for swim lessons, senior aquatics, and community programming. Additionally, enhancements include a state-of-the-art splash pad, upgraded water quality systems, new lifeguard stations, and sustainable energy features.
Delano Hunter, Director of the Department of General Services (DGS), emphasized the economic impact of the renovation, noting that nearly $2 million was invested in local businesses, creating job opportunities for District residents. “Projects like this strengthen our communities in more ways than one,” Hunter remarked. The Rosedale Recreation Center also offers diverse year-round programs, including athletic clinics and arts initiatives, fostering community engagement.
According to Thennie Freeman, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), “The reopening of Rosedale Pool is a celebration for this community.” He highlighted the importance of the facility as a safe and inviting space for residents to enjoy the summer heat and connect with neighbors. This reopening is part of a broader commitment by the Bowser Administration to enhance recreational facilities across all eight wards, including significant investments in other Ward 7 projects such as the Joy Evans Therapeutic Recreation Center and the Fort Davis Recreation Center.
