WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dasean Matthews, a 27-year-old man from Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty on Tuesday to the second-degree murder of two-year-old Mars Jones. The tragic incident occurred in October 2022 and has drawn significant attention due to its horrific nature. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the plea, emphasizing the commitment to justice for victims of violent crime.
According to court documents, the fatal abuse took place on October 13, 2022, during a day that began with Matthews and Mars, along with co-defendant Monet Jones-Mars’ mother-visiting a Dunkin Donuts. Surveillance footage captured Matthews striking the child with a closed fist, leading to the toddler falling against a metal railing. Later that day, more video evidence showed Matthews using cruel force against Mars, including grabbing him by the neck and striking him violently while they were alone in a vehicle.
After the series of assaults, Matthews presented an unconscious and bloodied Mars to co-defendant Jones and fled the scene. An autopsy confirmed that Mars died from complications related to inflicted head trauma. Matthews was arrested on November 4, 2022, and has remained in custody since.
Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in addressing the media, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Special Victims Unit of the Homicide Section in investigating the case. Matthews is scheduled for sentencing on February 1, 2027, before Superior Court Judge Jason Park.
