(Washington, DC) – As winter approaches, the District’s Snow Team concluded its annual Snow Mobilization Week, a five-day exercise aimed at ensuring readiness for the upcoming snow season. The initiative, led by the Department of Public Works (DPW) with support from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), involved inspections, testing, and maintenance of snow removal equipment, as well as replenishing salt and brine supplies.
During the week, technology teams also evaluated the systems used for monitoring weather conditions and tracking the snow removal process in real-time. DPW Interim Director Chris Rodriguez emphasized the importance of this preparation, stating that last year’s severe winter storm highlighted areas for improvement in the District’s snow response operations.
The week’s activities included a simulated winter storm, where operations leaders practiced adjusting deployment plans and decision-making in response to a mock forecast from the National Weather Service. The exercise culminated with a citywide dry run, allowing plow operators to familiarize themselves with their routes and identify potential obstacles.
The DC Snow Team comprises over 800 employees and utilizes a fleet that includes biodiesel-powered trucks and electric vehicles, aligning with the District’s sustainability goals. The DPW has recently modernized its technology for better tracking of plowing status, which will aid in operational decision-making during actual winter weather events.
Residents are encouraged to prepare for winter as well. The District advises property owners to clear snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks and curb ramps promptly. Those aged 65 and older or with qualifying disabilities can apply for an exemption from this requirement. Additionally, residents are encouraged to assist neighbors who may need help during winter weather conditions.
