(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to unveil a significant expansion at Barnard Elementary School in Ward 4 on Wednesday, August 26, at 11:30 am. The new $23 million addition, spanning 23,000 square feet, will introduce state-of-the-art general education classrooms, a hands-on Specials Lab, and dedicated spaces for special education. The facility also features sustainability innovations, including a green roof and new play fields, enhancing the learning environment for students.
This project aligns with Mayor Bowser’s commitment to modernizing educational facilities across the city. Since 2015, the District has invested nearly $5 billion in school improvements, with nearly $800 million earmarked for modernization projects specifically in Ward 4. This expansion at Barnard Elementary represents a substantial step forward in providing high-quality learning environments for students in the community.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be attended by key figures, including Dr. Kim Jackson, Interim Chancellor of DC Public Schools, Delano Hunter, Director of the DC Department of General Services, and Dr. Grace Reid, Principal of Barnard Elementary School. The event will take place at Barnard Elementary, located at 430 Decatur Street NW, with the closest bus route being C75 and nearby bikeshare options available at Kansas Ave & Sherman Cr NW.
