Metropolitan Branch Trail Closure for Resurfacing Between Brookland and Fort Totten

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced a temporary closure of a section of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) for resurfacing and pavement improvements, with work set to begin on Monday, October 5, 2026. The affected area will extend from the Brookland-CUA Metro Station north toward the Fort Totten Transfer Station, and the project is expected to last approximately four weeks, weather permitting.

This section of the MBT, one of the earliest constructed, is due for resurfacing to enhance safety and comfort for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using mobility devices. The improvements aim to restore the trail surface, making it smoother and more accessible for all users.

During the construction period, pedestrians will be redirected to the sidewalk on the west side of John McCormack Drive NE, while cyclists and scooter users are advised to utilize John McCormack Drive NE as their detour route. Those choosing to walk on the sidewalk should exercise caution, reduce their speed, and yield to pedestrians. Detour signage will be installed to assist trail users in navigating the area, and the parking lane along the east side of John McCormack Drive NE will be temporarily closed to facilitate construction staging.

DDOT acknowledges the significance of the Metropolitan Branch Trail as a vital transportation and recreational link for Northeast Washington communities. The agency has requested the public’s patience during the resurfacing process and encourages trail users to remain alert near the work zone and allow additional time for their travels.
