While many employees will continue to provide essential services, residents should be aware of the changes to specific operations, particularly those related to public safety and support for vulnerable populations.
Emergency shelter access remains a priority, with low-barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness operating 24 hours on Labor Day. Notable locations include the Harriet Tubman shelter at 1910 Massachusetts Avenue SE and the 801 East shelter at 2722 Martin L. King Jr. Avenue SE. Additionally, the Downtown Day Services Center at 1313 New York Avenue NW will offer walk-in services from 9 am to 5 pm, welcoming individuals on a first-come, first-served basis. For youth, several drop-in centers, such as Zoe’s Doors at 900 Rhode Island Avenue NE and the Sasha Bruce Center at 741 8th Street SE, will also be open to provide essential support.
The Department of Behavioral Health will offer mental health support throughout the holiday. Residents can contact the 988 crisis line for free, confidential assistance, ensuring that help is available for those facing anxiety, depression, or substance use concerns. Additionally, the 24/7 DC Stabilization Center and emergency psychiatric services will remain operational, allowing individuals in crisis to receive immediate care without cost.
In terms of recreational options, the Department of Parks and Recreation will keep outdoor parks, playgrounds, and select pools open for public use. Residents can enjoy outdoor pools at locations such as Banneker and Volta Park from 10 am to 6 pm, providing opportunities for leisure and community engagement on the holiday.
