The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced the arrest of a suspect involved in a shooting incident that injured a young child in Northeast Washington, DC. The shooting occurred on June 9, 2026, at approximately 9:50 p.m. in the 1700 block of Benning Road, NE.
According to MPD officials, the suspect discharged a firearm within an apartment complex before fleeing the scene as officers arrived. Responding officers discovered a two-year-old boy inside an apartment with a graze wound resulting from the shooting. The child was promptly treated at the scene by DC Fire and EMS and subsequently transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
After an extensive investigation, law enforcement officials arrested 19-year-old Casanova Lamons of Northeast DC on September 1, 2026. The arrest was made by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force under a DC Superior Court arrest warrant. Lamons now faces charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun).
