The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with an assault involving a firearm that took place in Northwest Washington, D.C. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 23, 2026, at the intersection of 12th Street and U Street.

According to police reports, the suspect approached the victim around 2:02 a.m., brandished a handgun, and threatened the individual before fleeing the scene. This alarming incident raised concerns in the community regarding public safety in the area.

On September 15, 2026, police, working with the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, located and apprehended 38-year-old Waqas Zulfiqar from Woodbridge, Virginia. Zulfiqar faces charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun). The arrest was made under a warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court.

The MPD continues to investigate the incident and urges anyone with additional information to come forward. Local residents are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
