WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anthony Thomas, a 31-year-old repeat felon, has been sentenced to 42 months in prison after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The sentencing, announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, took place in U.S. District Court before Judge Timothy J. Kelly. In addition to his prison term, Thomas will serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
The case stems from an incident on May 19, 2025, when officers from the Metropolitan Police Department approached a group of individuals at the Stanton Terrace Apartments in Southeast D.C. During the encounter, officers observed a bulge on Thomas’s back, leading them to conduct a stop and subsequently recover a loaded ghost gun-an untraceable firearm devoid of a serial number-along with 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition. A search conducted after his arrest also uncovered suspected narcotics, including marijuana, hashish, methamphetamine mixed with cocaine, and pills, two of which tested positive for fentanyl.
This conviction marks Thomas’s third offense involving illegal possession or use of a handgun. His prior criminal history includes convictions for aggravated assault and armed robbery. Notably, he was on supervised release from a previous firearms conviction when he was arrested for this latest offense.
The investigation into Thomas’s activities was carried out by the Metropolitan Police Department in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Washington Field Office. The case was prosecuted as part of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative, a law enforcement effort aimed at reducing gun violence and prioritizing federal firearms violations, which aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order emphasizing tougher penalties for firearms offenders.
As the city continues to tackle issues of gun violence and public safety, this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to address illegal firearms possession and related offenses in Washington, D.C.
