WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a significant development in the tragic murder case of Audora Williams, 38-year-old Wonell Jones, Jr. was found guilty today in D.C. Superior Court for the killing that took place on July 19, 2022. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the verdict, which includes charges of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
During the trial, evidence presented revealed that Jones had violated a temporary protective order designed to keep Williams and her children safe. On the day of the incident, he entered Williams’s apartment in the 2900 block of Knox Place, SE, while eight children were present, including his own and those shared with Williams. Following a grocery run with one of her young sons, Jones engaged in a heated argument with Williams before he shot her more than 20 times, using two different firearms. The chilling event occurred in close proximity to the children, severely traumatizing them and altering their lives forever.
U.S. Attorney Pirro emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “Today’s verdict, guilty on all charges, is a step toward justice for Williams and a clear affirmation that such brutality will be met with unwavering accountability.” After the shooting, Jones fled to Florida, where he was arrested on August 29, 2022. He was extradited back to D.C. on October 26, 2022, and has remained in custody since then.
The case, which has attracted significant attention due to its brutality and the impact on the children involved, was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department. Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in announcing the verdict, highlighting the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in bringing Jones to justice. Sentencing for Jones is scheduled for October 30, 2026.
