The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a shooting incident that injured a 2-year-old boy in Northeast Washington, D.C. The shooting occurred on June 10, 2026, in the 1700 block of Benning Road, NE.
At approximately 9:50 p.m. on that date, Fifth District officers responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex. Upon arrival, they discovered the young victim inside an apartment with a graze wound. Emergency services were quick to respond, and the child was transported to a local hospital with injuries that, fortunately, were deemed non-life-threatening.
Following an extensive investigation, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force successfully located and arrested 19-year-old Casanova Lamons of Northeast D.C. on September 1, 2026. Lamons has been charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) in relation to the shooting.
This incident has raised concerns about public safety in the Benning Road area, a neighborhood that has seen its share of gun violence in recent years. Local residents are hopeful that the swift action by law enforcement will help deter future incidents and provide some measure of relief to the community.
