Mayor Muriel Bowser officially launched Hispanic Heritage Month in Washington, DC, today, marking a significant milestone as the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs (MOLA) celebrates its 50th anniversary. This year’s observance, which runs from September 15 to October 15, highlights five decades of advocacy and partnership with the Latino communities in the District. Throughout the month, MOLA plans to collaborate with various District agencies and community organizations to host a series of events across the city.
Established in 1976 under the District of Columbia Latino Community Development Act, MOLA has played a pivotal role in supporting community initiatives through its Latino Community Development Grant program. The program offers grants of up to $50,000 to local nonprofits, investing significantly in community-driven projects. Since 2015, funding for these grants has increased by nearly 80%, which includes the introduction of the Immigrant Justice Legal Services Grant aimed at expanding legal support for immigrant residents.
Eduardo Perdomo, Director of the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, emphasized the contributions of Latino communities to the fabric of Washington, DC. “For generations, Latino communities have enriched our culture, strengthened our economy, and contributed to our social fabric,” he said. He added that MOLA has been dedicated to expanding access to resources and opportunities for residents, and the 50th anniversary serves as a moment to honor those who have shaped the city.
As part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, the Bowser Administration is sponsoring several events, including the upcoming “My Little El Salvador – Cumbia Fest,” scheduled for September 26 at Lamont Plaza. This festive event aims to celebrate Salvadoran culture with traditional performances and activities. Additionally, residents can participate in the Fiesta DC Parade alongside Mayor Bowser, further emphasizing the vibrant Latino heritage in the District.
