The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has awarded a new five-year Operations & Maintenance contract to Lyft for the Capital Bikeshare program. This agreement is expected to facilitate significant advancements in electrification and expand the station network, ensuring that Capital Bikeshare remains one of the most affordable bikeshare systems in the nation.
DDOT reported that Capital Bikeshare achieved a record-breaking milestone in 2025, surpassing 6.6 million trips and setting a single-day ridership record of over 35,000 rides on March 29. The program also celebrated its 15th anniversary and expanded its network to 820 stations with the installation of its 800th station. By June 2026, the system had further grown to over 850 stations, demonstrating its increasing popularity among residents.
Sharon Kershbaum, DDOT Director, highlighted the importance of the program’s success, stating that the high ridership indicates Capital Bikeshare meets the needs of the community. The new contract with Lyft aims to build on this momentum by enhancing the network and advancing electrification initiatives. The plan includes the implementation of grid-connected stations that allow e-bike batteries to charge while docked, which could lower operating costs and improve bike availability.
Blake Dickler, General Manager of Capital Bikeshare, expressed enthusiasm for continuing the partnership with DDOT and the regional jurisdictions. He emphasized the commitment to investing in the communities that have embraced Capital Bikeshare as a vital part of daily life for nearly 16 years.
