The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced that long-term lane closures will begin in the southbound 9th Street Tunnel starting September 28, 2026. This closure is part of necessary structural and infrastructure repairs, which are expected to last until June 30, 2027.
According to DDOT, the work will commence near Constitution Avenue NW and will continue beneath the National Mall. Throughout this period, one outer southbound travel lane will be closed continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The left outer lane will be closed first, transitioning to the right outer lane as repairs progress. In addition, there may be temporary closures of the center travel lane during off-peak hours to facilitate construction activities, potentially reducing southbound traffic to one lane.
The extensive closures are necessary to address damage sustained earlier this year to the tunnel infrastructure. DDOT aims to ensure the safety and reliability of the District’s transportation network through these essential repairs.
Motorists are advised to expect delays, especially during peak travel times, and are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly. Caution is urged when navigating through the work zone, and the use of alternate routes may help to minimize delays during this construction period.
