Two Washington, D.C. men, Deondre Rogers and Hanif Brown, have been sentenced to 17 years and 14 years in prison, respectively, for their involvement in a series of armed robberies and carjackings earlier this year. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the sentences today, highlighting the severe nature of the crimes committed by the young defendants.
Both Rogers, 20, and Brown, 20, pleaded guilty on August 3, 2023, to multiple charges, including carjacking, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. They were charged as adults despite being under 18 at the time of their offenses. The government sought lengthy prison terms for both defendants, which were imposed by Superior Court Judge Jason Park. While Rogers received the full 17-year sentence, Brown was sentenced to 14 years under the Youth Rehabilitation Act, largely due to his lack of prior criminal history and expression of remorse.
According to the evidence presented, the crime spree began on April 7, 2023, when the duo rear-ended a vehicle while driving a stolen car. They threatened the occupants with firearms and stole their vehicle. Subsequent armed robberies followed, including a notable incident on May 4, when they stole high-value items such as a luxury watch and a designer belt from two victims in U Street NW. In a brazen display of their criminal exploits, Rogers and Brown later shared videos on social media flaunting the stolen property.
Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in recognizing the investigative efforts that led to the convictions. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Travis Wolf and Brian Hanley, who successfully argued for the sentences in light of the violent nature of the crimes and the impact on the victims.
