(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to celebrate the completion of a significant modernization project at Harriet Tubman Elementary School on Monday, September 28, at 11:00 a.m. The event marks the final back-to-school ribbon cutting of her tenure as mayor. The $91 million renovation has transformed the school into a modern educational facility, expanding its capacity to accommodate over 600 students.
The newly constructed 105,000-square-foot campus retains elements of the school’s original design while introducing contemporary features. Among the upgrades are new playgrounds designed for both early childhood education and children ages 5 to 12, as well as a gymnasium, auditorium, library, music classrooms, and dedicated spaces for student support. The school also includes specialized labs that provide flexible areas for activities such as yoga and enrichment programs.
This modernization is part of a broader initiative involving eight school modernizations and expansions across the city aimed for completion by the 2026-2027 school year. Since 2015, the District has invested a total of $261 million in school projects within Ward 1, highlighting a commitment to improving educational facilities in the area.
In attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, Interim Chancellor of DC Public Schools Dr. Kim Jackson, and Osei Headley, Deputy Director of the Capital Construction Division at the Department of General Services, among others. The event will take place at Harriet Tubman Elementary School, located at 3101 13th Street NW, with the closest Metro station being Columbia Heights.
