DDOT Announces New Regulations to Strengthen Shared Micromobility Safety, Accessibility, and Operator Accountability

Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced new regulations aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and accountability within the shared micromobility program. The updated rules include fines for operators who violate guidelines and modifications to support low-income users of shared devices. These changes are designed to improve compliance and public safety as the popularity of micromobility options continues to grow in the District.

According to DDOT, the new regulations will establish fines of up to $100 for various infractions, such as improper device parking and failure to relocate incorrectly parked vehicles. The agency hopes these financial penalties will encourage operators to take more responsibility for their fleets and ensure that pedestrian access routes and bike lanes remain unobstructed.

The low-income customer plan (LICP) has also been revised to provide users with a monthly credit of 300 non-cumulative minutes, along with a 50% discount once the limit is reached. This change will allow low-income users to manage their travel on micromobility devices more effectively, aligning the plan with the Capital Bikeshare low-income program.

DDOT plans to introduce additional regulations in the coming months in response to public feedback. These forthcoming regulations will address several topics, including vehicle speed, sidewalk riding, and updates to the permit application process. The overall goal is to advance safety standards and promote responsible growth within the shared micromobility sector.
