The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced a major construction project that will lead to significant road closures along 16th Street NW, starting October 19, 2026. The 16th Street Landscaped Medians Project aims to enhance the area with landscaped plantings, the removal of impervious surfaces, and improved crosswalks. The project is expected to unfold in two phases, with the first phase lasting until November 25, 2026.
During the first phase, 16th Street NW will be closed to all traffic between I Street NW and K Street NW on weekdays from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Motorists can expect detours at westbound I Street NW, 17th Street NW, and eastbound K Street NW. The second phase of construction will commence on November 25, 2026, closing 16th Street NW between H Street NW and I Street NW, with a similar schedule and detours at eastbound H Street NW, Vermont Avenue NW, and westbound I Street NW. This phase is projected to be completed by December 31, 2026.
DDOT emphasizes that all detours will ensure ADA accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Construction activities will occur behind barriers during standard working hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Residents and travelers in the area are urged to remain alert and observe signage and work zones as the project progresses.
The department appreciates the public’s patience as it works to improve this critical transportation corridor. For further details on the project, residents can visit the DDOT’s website dedicated to the 16th Street Landscaped Median Project.
