The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Southeast Washington, D.C. The incident took place on May 12, 2026, and has drawn attention as the community grapples with ongoing concerns about public safety.
Officers from the Seventh District responded to reports of an unconscious person in the 1300 block of Congress Street, Southeast, at approximately 6:29 a.m. Upon arrival, they found an adult female suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the prompt response from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Jasmine Malone, who had no fixed address.
Following an investigation, authorities issued an arrest warrant for 23-year-old Malachi Rawlings, a Southeast D.C. resident. Rawlings was apprehended on July 31, 2026, by members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He has been charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed in connection with Malone’s death.
