WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 29-year-old man, Tyree Irving, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the homicide of Davane Williams, which took place on January 15, 2019. The sentencing occurred in D.C. Superior Court, as announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Irving pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed on February 2, 2026. Following the plea, Judge Neil Kravitz imposed the 18-year prison term on July 24, 2026, which will be followed by five years of supervised release. The incident occurred at approximately 2:59 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street, NW, outside the Tyler House, a well-known residential facility in the area.
On that fateful day, Irving approached Williams and a group of men gathered on the sidewalk. After a brief confrontation, Irving brandished a .40 caliber pistol concealed in his clothing and fired five shots, hitting Williams multiple times. Following the shooting, Irving fled the scene, changing his clothes before escaping towards the Sursum Corda neighborhood. He was apprehended by law enforcement on February 27, 2019, and has remained in custody since.
In a statement regarding the case, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Interim Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Jeffery W. Carroll, praised the thorough investigation conducted by the police and acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Hall and Wes Faulkner in prosecuting the case. This sentencing serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to public safety in Washington, D.C., particularly in neighborhoods impacted by violent crime.
