The Office of the Mayor of Washington, DC, announced that leaf collection services will soon be available across all eight wards of the city. This initiative aims to assist residents in managing the seasonal accumulation of leaves, particularly during the fall months when trees shed their foliage.

Starting in the coming weeks, the leaf collection program will provide residents with scheduled pickups, ensuring that leaves are collected efficiently and responsibly. The city is encouraging residents to participate by placing leaves in the designated collection areas, making the process smoother for both residents and city workers.

The Mayor’s office emphasized that this program is designed to enhance the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods, while also contributing to environmental sustainability efforts. By collecting leaves, the city aims to prevent them from clogging storm drains and contributing to localized flooding issues.

For residents seeking more information about the leaf collection schedule and guidelines, the Office of the Mayor recommends checking their official website and social media channels. This initiative reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all residents.

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the launch of the District’s 2026-2027 leaf collection season, which is set to begin on Monday, November 2. During an event with the Department of Public Works (DPW), Mayor Bowser emphasized the collaborative effort between residents and the government in maintaining clean neighborhoods and protecting local waterways.

“Keeping the District clean and beautiful is a shared responsibility, and leaf collection is one of the best examples of how residents and government work together to get the job done,” said Mayor Bowser. The leaf collection initiative not only helps clean the streets but also diverts organic material from landfills, contributing to sustainability efforts.

According to DPW Interim Director Chris Rodriguez, crews will collect leaves from residential streets across all eight wards. Each residential street that receives DPW trash and recycling services will have at least two scheduled leaf collections during the season. Residents are encouraged to check their collection schedules and rake leaves out during their assigned week to assist in this important service.

The annual leaf collection season is part of a broader effort to expand organic waste diversion in the District. Since the beginning of the Bowser Administration, food composting programs have successfully collected over 11 million pounds of food waste for composting. In an ongoing effort, the DPW is expanding its Food Waste Smart Bin Program, aiming to provide residents with increased access to composting options.

Residents are reminded that the leaf collection season starts with Section A, and they should rake their leaves by Sunday, November 1, to ensure timely pickup. To stay informed about collection schedules, residents can expect approximately 10 days’ advance notice from DPW, along with weekly updates regarding when to rake leaves into tree boxes or along curbs in front of their homes.

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to launch the 2026-2027 leaf collection season on Monday, October 19, at 11 am. The announcement will take place alongside officials from the Department of Public Works (DPW) as they outline the plans for the upcoming seasonal operation, which begins November 2. The event will emphasize the critical role of residents in maintaining clean neighborhoods and supporting sustainability efforts by properly managing fallen leaves and organic waste.

Each year, the DPW collects thousands of tons of leaves from residential streets across all eight wards, a process designed to prevent leaves from obstructing storm drains and to promote environmental sustainability by diverting organic materials from landfills. As part of the kickoff event, a demonstration on how to prepare discarded pumpkins for composting will be featured, with leaf collection operations scheduled to follow in the area.

The kickoff event will take place at 1600 G Street SE, with public transportation options including several bus routes and the Potomac Avenue Metro Station nearby. Members of the press interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP to the contact provided by the Office of the Mayor of Washington, DC.

For those unable to attend in person, the DC Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment will provide a live stream of the event, accessible via the mayor’s official website and social media platforms.

(Washington, DC) – The Department of Public Works (DPW) has achieved a remarkable sustainability milestone, collecting over 1 million pounds of compostable material through its network of Smart Composting Bins. This achievement reflects the growing commitment of District residents to recycle food waste, as the initiative has quickly taken root across the city’s 31 Smart Bins.

The 1 million pounds of food scraps diverted from landfills represent a significant environmental impact, with the compost created from this waste equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting approximately 3,500 trees over a decade. “Collecting this much food waste in the 18 months we’ve had the bins means a significant number of citizens are using them,” stated DPW Director Anthony Crispino. He noted that nearly 10 percent of all food waste collected by DPW in the past ten years has come from these food waste bins, highlighting the community’s role in fostering a healthier environment.

To further enhance accessibility to the program, DPW plans to roll out an additional 20 Smart Composting Bins this fall, expanding the initiative to more neighborhoods across the District. Nearly 10,000 residents have already registered to utilize the bins, which facilitate the reduction of waste and combat climate change efforts in Washington, DC.

Since the inception of its food waste diversion programs in 2014, which include residential curbside collection, weekend farmers market drop-off sites, and the 24-hour Smart Bins, DPW has successfully collected over 11 million pounds of food waste for composting. For residents interested in participating, a food waste drop-off map is available to locate all DPW Smart Bin sites throughout the city.

DDOT Launches Cool Corridors Pilot to Combat Urban Heat in Washington, DC

(Washington, DC) – The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced the launch of the Cool Corridors pilot study, an innovative initiative aimed at reducing extreme urban heat in neighborhoods across the city. Set to begin the week of July 27, 2026, the project will apply solar reflective “cool pavement” coatings at five designated urban heat island sites, which are areas significantly warmer than their rural surroundings, particularly during the summer months.

Urban heat islands pose a significant challenge for residents, especially in neighborhoods with limited tree cover and extensive pavement. Research indicates that downtown Washington, DC can be 10 to 15 degrees hotter than surrounding areas in summer, exacerbating health risks such as heat stroke, particularly among older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, and historically underserved communities. The Cool Corridors initiative aims to mitigate these effects by employing light-colored, solar-reflective coatings that can lower surface temperatures by up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the importance of creating safer, more comfortable streets for all residents. “Every resident deserves streets that are safe, comfortable, and built to meet the challenges of a changing climate,” Kershbaum stated. The pilot program is part of the broader Cool Corridors Multi-Hazard Resilience Study, which seeks to enhance the resilience of corridors linking residents to small parks and open spaces, ensuring they remain accessible during extreme weather events.

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving multiple city agencies, including the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE), the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), and the Department of Health (DOH). The project is partially funded by a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant aimed at building resilient infrastructure and communities. As Washington, DC continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change, the Cool Corridors pilot serves as a proactive step towards creating a cooler, more sustainable urban environment.
