WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 20-year-old District resident, Rodney Bennett, was sentenced to nine years in prison for his involvement in a series of armed robberies and an assault while incarcerated. The sentencing took place in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia, as announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Bennett pleaded guilty on March 23, 2026, to charges including one count of armed robbery, one count of robbery, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan imposed a sentence that includes nine years of imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release.
The evidence presented by the government detailed Bennett’s criminal actions, beginning with an armed robbery on August 28, 2024. Around 11:10 p.m., Bennett approached a man returning a rental scooter at 5th and Neal Place NE, brandishing a firearm while demanding the victim’s cellphone and wallet. Although the victim complied, he later managed to retrieve his phone and sought help from nearby patrons who called the police. Notably, Bennett was monitored via a GPS device that placed him at the scene during the robbery.
Just over an hour later, on August 29, 2024, Bennett targeted two individuals in an underground parking garage at 1924 8th Street NW. After pursuing one of the victims, he brandished a firearm and demanded cash and a watch before fleeing the area with the stolen items. His GPS tracking again confirmed his presence at the location during the crime.
Bennett was arrested on October 9, 2024, by the Metropolitan Police Department and has remained in custody since. While incarcerated, he was involved in a violent incident on November 10, 2025, where he stabbed another inmate with a sharp metal object during a dispute, causing serious injuries. This case highlights ongoing public safety concerns within D.C. correctional facilities and the broader community.
