DC Court of Appeals Launches New Petition for Review Application
The District of Columbia Court of Appeals has introduced a new electronic Petition for Review (PFR) application aimed at enhancing the accessibility and efficiency of the filing process for residents. This initiative marks a significant shift from the traditional methods of submitting petitions, which previously required individuals to either mail documents or visit the courthouse in person.
With the launch of the PFR app, petitioners can now file their appeals electronically from any location, effectively eliminating mailing delays and travel requirements. This innovation not only streamlines the filing process but also provides petitioners with an email confirmation upon submission, along with the ability to download a copy of their filing for personal records.
However, it is important to note that the app does not support online payment at this time. Petitioners are still required to mail or deliver their payments to the D.C. Court of Appeals Public Office. For those looking to start the appeal process, detailed instructions are available on the court’s official website.
“The launch of the Petition for Review app represents an important step forward in expanding access to justice,” stated Christina Brito, Senior Legal Manager for the Clerk’s Office of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. She emphasized that the new digital tool is designed to remove barriers associated with travel, mailing delays, and limited office hours, thereby empowering more individuals in the District to engage with the appellate process. This initiative aligns with the court’s commitment to being “Open to All, Trusted by All, and Providing Justice for All.”
The new PFR application is expected to benefit residents across all quadrants of the city, including neighborhoods in NW, NE, SW, and SE Washington, making the legal process more accessible to all District residents.
