DC Public Schools Celebrates Summer Diploma Recipients with Rainbow Graduation

Washington, DC – In a celebration of resilience and achievement, DC Public Schools (DCPS) hosted its annual Rainbow Graduation ceremony today at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium. Interim Chancellor Dr. Kim Jackson led the festivities, honoring nearly 130 students from 15 schools who received their diplomas. This event provided a platform for students who completed their coursework over the summer or missed their spring ceremonies to celebrate their hard-earned accomplishments.

“Each year, Rainbow Graduation represents the incredible work ethic and persistence of our scholars,” said Dr. Jackson. “This cohort of students overcame challenges in their educational journeys, and through their individual resolve and support from DCPS, they walked across the stage as proud high school graduates.” The ceremony highlighted the commitment of DCPS to support students from all neighborhoods, ensuring that every graduate has the opportunity to celebrate their success.

Rainbow Graduation, traditionally held in August, marks the culmination of a student’s K-12 academic journey, recognizing their perseverance in meeting educational goals. The event also serves as an opportunity for the DCPS community to come together and honor the dedication of each graduate, reflecting the diversity and strength of the district’s educational landscape.

During the ceremony, Deputy Chancellor of Social, Emotional, and Academic Development, Dr. Drewana Bey, delivered the keynote address. Following her speech, Dr. Jackson formally accepted the graduating class on behalf of Mayor Muriel Bowser. This year’s Rainbow graduates are part of the broader DCPS Class of 2026, which includes nearly 3,000 students. More than 2,000 graduates will pursue further education in two- or four-year degree programs, while nearly 500 will enter career education, apprenticeships, or the workforce. Approximately 50 graduates have committed to serving in the United States Armed Forces, showcasing the diverse paths these young individuals are taking as they step into their futures.
