(Washington, DC) – In response to an impending heatwave, Mayor Muriel Bowser has activated an Extreme Heat Alert for residents and visitors of the District from Wednesday, July 15 through Saturday, July 18. The National Weather Service is predicting high temperatures that may reach or exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday, coupled with high humidity levels that could push the heat index above 105 degrees. Overnight lows are also expected to remain uncomfortably high, hovering above 75 degrees.

As temperatures rise, Mayor Bowser is urging the community to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Vulnerable populations, including older adults, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions, are particularly at risk. Residents are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seek air-conditioned spaces or shaded areas, and limit outdoor activities, especially during the peak heat hours between 11 AM and 4 PM.

The District is prepared to deploy additional resources to safeguard public health during this heat alert. Residents can access a list of cooling centers throughout the city by visiting heat.dc.gov. Mayor Bowser emphasized the importance of community care, encouraging residents to check on neighbors and family members who may be more susceptible to extreme heat conditions.

Officials remind everyone to avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, as the temperature inside can escalate rapidly. If anyone notices an animal in distress due to the heat, they are urged to contact the Brandywine Valley SPCA at (202) 888-PETS. By taking these precautions, residents can help ensure their safety and the safety of those around them as the District braces for the upcoming heatwave.
