Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a significant investment aimed at bolstering Washington, DC’s technology sector during the 11th annual DC Startup and Tech Week. The Office of the Mayor revealed over $5 million in funding to accelerate local startups and enhance the District’s tech economy. This funding initiative is designed to support six new startup accelerator cohorts and facilitate the launch of five new companies.
“To grow our economy, we must invest in the people and businesses creating good-paying jobs for DC residents,” Bowser stated. The funding is part of the Mayor’s broader economic Growth Agenda, which emphasizes diversifying the economy, enhancing access to capital, and strengthening competitive industries within the city.
The newly established Technology Ecosystem Fund, with an initial allocation of $2 million, aims to assist incubators, accelerators, and entrepreneurial programs that foster early-stage company development in DC. The inaugural awards from this fund were granted to three companies: New Majority Ventures, SOAR Bio, LLC, and Plug and Play, collectively receiving $2 million for their efforts to support local entrepreneurs and drive innovation.
Additionally, the Mayor announced seven investments totaling $3,150,000 made through the $26 million DC Venture Capital Fund, which seeks to provide early-stage financing and attract private investment into DC-based companies. The investments focus on industries such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, aerospace, and energy, effectively doubling the impact of the fund to $52 million.
Alongside the funding announcements, the Office of the Mayor released the State of DC Tech 2026 report, which outlines the current state of the District’s technology economy and identifies growth opportunities. The report indicates that there are approximately 51,000 technology jobs in DC, underscoring the importance of continued investment in this sector to foster job creation and economic resilience.
