Mayor Bowser Celebrates LGBTQIA+ History Month and 20 Years of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs (MOLGBTQA) are celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month this October, while also marking the 20th anniversary of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs. Throughout the month, residents are encouraged to recognize the contributions and milestones that have shaped the LGBTQIA+ community in the District.

“LGBTQIA+ History Month is a reminder that our history is not simply something we look back on-it is something we continue to make,” said Japer Bowles, Director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs. The office has worked for two decades to connect LGBTQIA+ residents with essential resources and services, advocate for community priorities, and strengthen partnerships with local organizations.

Established in 2006, MOLGBTQA serves as a liaison between the District government and the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring that their needs are represented in local policies and programs. Over the years, the office has focused on expanding access to resources and fostering community engagement.

This year’s celebrations include various events aimed at honoring LGBTQIA+ history and culture. Notable upcoming events are “The Relationship Lab: A Healthy Relationships Series,” taking place on October 6, 13, and 20, which will explore the dynamics of healthy relationships. Additionally, the MOLGBTQA will host a “Birthday Bash” on October 15 at Penn Social, celebrating the office’s achievements over the last two decades with live entertainment and refreshments.

LGBTQIA+ History Month serves to recognize the achievements and history of LGBTQIA+ individuals, highlighting significant movements and milestones that have influenced the community. As the District continues to celebrate its rich LGBTQIA+ heritage, residents are invited to participate in the month’s events and reflect on the ongoing contributions of the community to Washington, DC.
