(Washington, DC) – As Halloween approaches, Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging families in the District to participate in free, family-friendly Halloween events planned across all eight wards. The Mayor’s office is also urging community members to collaborate in ensuring the safety of children and teens during the Halloween season, particularly on October 31, when many will be out trick-or-treating.
The DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) highlighted that various District agencies, including the Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Public Library, and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, are organizing free events. Additionally, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice will deploy Halloween Safety Go Teams on October 31 from 6 PM to 1 AM across 15 locations in the District. These teams, composed of non-law enforcement individuals, aim to engage with families and monitor situations to help de-escalate any potential issues.
To enhance safety on Halloween weekend, MPD has provided several tips for drivers. They urge motorists to remain vigilant for trick-or-treaters, especially after dark, and to slow down to reduce risks. Drivers are reminded to avoid distractions such as mobile phones and not to drive under the influence. Instead, they should consider using public transportation or rideshare services.
For families participating in trick-or-treating, MPD recommends that children travel in small groups accompanied by parents or trusted adults. They should wear bright, reflective, and flame-retardant clothing, and only cross streets at designated corners or crosswalks. Children are advised to stay on well-lit streets and avoid entering homes. Parents should inspect treats before consumption to ensure their safety.
Residents are encouraged to report any immediate threats or emergencies they encounter during Halloween activities. By staying alert and working together, the community can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
