(Washington, DC) – The Office of the Mayor of Washington, DC, has announced that on Monday, October 12, the city will observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day. While many District Government services will be modified for the holiday, essential operations will continue, ensuring that critical services remain available to residents.
Emergency shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness will operate as usual, with several low-barrier shelters open 24 hours on October 12. Notable locations include Harriet Tubman at 1910 Massachusetts Avenue SE, and Pat Handy at 810 5th Street NW. The Downtown Day Services Center at 1313 New York Avenue NW will also be open from 9 am to 5 pm, providing walk-in services without an appointment.
Additionally, a range of youth drop-in centers will be available throughout the day for residents facing homelessness. Zoe’s Doors, located at 900 Rhode Island Avenue NE, will remain open 24 hours, while other centers such as the Latin American Youth Center on 3045 15th Street NW and the SAMU First Response Center at 650 Pennsylvania Avenue SE will operate from 9 am to 7 pm.
The Department of Behavioral Health encourages individuals dealing with mental health or substance use issues to utilize their resources, including a 24/7 crisis hotline available at 988. Other important services, such as the DC Stabilization Center and the emergency psychiatric clinic, will also be accessible throughout the holiday.
Residents are advised to check with specific facilities for any additional details or changes to hours of operation during the Indigenous Peoples’ Day observance.
