MPD Investigating Georgia Avenue Pedestrian Fatality

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is investigating a pedestrian fatality that occurred on Georgia Avenue in Northwest Washington, D.C. The incident took place on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at approximately 4:08 p.m., in the 7700 block of Georgia Avenue, which is part of the Fourth District.

Responding officers found an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries at the scene. The victim, identified as 56-year-old Bernard Massey from Silver Spring, Maryland, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries five days later, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Massey was standing on the east sidewalk before running into the roadway midblock and outside of a designated crosswalk. He reportedly ran between a stopped yellow school bus and a black sedan, both facing northbound in the left lane. As he crossed into the southbound lanes, he was struck by a black 2025 Tesla Model Y. The driver of the Tesla remained on the scene and contacted 911, cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. No signs of impairment have been observed from the driver.
