WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 41-year-old woman from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, has been charged with vandalizing the Atlantic Theatre Pavilion of the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, according to a criminal complaint announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. Melissa Farris, who is also known as “Melissa Lovewell,” faces charges for willfully injuring or committing a depredation against property of the United States and destruction of a veterans’ memorial.
The incident occurred on August 13, when U.S. Park Police responded to a report of a disorderly person at the memorial. Witnesses reported seeing Farris spray painting graffiti on the Atlantic Theatre Pavilion, located at the eastern end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Upon arrival, officers observed orange paint on the walls, displaying the message “Clean Hands Dirty $,” alongside additional green and pink paint throughout the area. Law enforcement also recovered a sign with painted letters that matched the graffiti found on the memorial.
Prior to the vandalism, Farris had been arrested on August 10 for unlawfully camping on federal property near the intersection of 18th Street NW and Virginia Avenue NW, just a few blocks from the memorial. During that arrest, she live-streamed the encounter on her social media accounts, identifying herself as “Melissa Lovewell.” Investigators later discovered that she had recorded multiple videos on August 13, including one in which she allegedly admitted to damaging the World War II Memorial.
U.S. Attorney Pirro condemned the act of vandalism, stating, “Defacing the World War II Memorial is a disgusting act and an insult to the Americans who fought and died for our country.” She emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for such actions, especially those that desecrate memorials dedicated to the sacrifices of veterans. The memorial stands as a tribute to the 16 million Americans who served in World War II and the more than 400,000 who lost their lives.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding public safety and respect for national monuments within the District. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to protect and preserve the integrity of such significant sites on the National Mall.
