(WASHINGTON, DC) – In a significant achievement for local public health services, the DC Health Vital Records Division (DCVRD) has been awarded national accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). This recognition highlights the Division’s dedication to adhering to national standards of quality, performance, and continuous improvement in managing vital records and health statistics services. Among 58 eligible jurisdictions, DCVRD stands out as one of only six units nationwide to attain this prestigious accreditation since the introduction of the Vital Records/Health Statistics (VRHS) Accreditation Program in 2018.
Dr. Ayanna Bennett, the Director of DC Health, expressed pride in the Division’s accomplishment. “Every day, our team provides services that are essential to District residents, while also ensuring that vital records and health data are accurately maintained and protected,” she stated. This accreditation serves as a testament to the Division’s commitment to delivering high-quality services and leveraging quality data to enhance public health programs throughout the District.
While vital records may not be the first aspect of public health that comes to mind, they are fundamental to the health and well-being of local communities across all eight wards of Washington, DC. The DCVRD is responsible for filing, protecting, and preserving crucial documents such as birth and death certificates. The data collected through these records play a vital role in supporting population statistics, health research, and the formulation of effective public health policies that cater to the diverse needs of residents.
According to PHAB President and CEO Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the implications of such accreditation extend beyond the health department. “For communities served by accredited VRHS units, accreditation ensures that data and critical information are managed with care and used to guide essential public health services,” she noted. In DC, the Vital Records Division serves nearly 70,000 customers annually, issuing over 100,000 certificates each year, with a dedicated team of 17 employees assisting between 100 to 200 clients daily.
