Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to celebrate the completion of the $67 million modernization project at Malcolm X Elementary School in Ward 8 on Monday, September 21 at 11 am. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, the eldest daughter of Malcolm X, along with officials from the DC Department of General Services (DGS) and DC Public Schools (DCPS).
The newly modernized Malcolm X Elementary School boasts an impressive 85,000 square feet of space, nearly doubling the size of the former facility. It features expanded early childhood education classrooms, contemporary general elementary classrooms, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) spaces, a new gymnasium, a library, outdoor learning environments, playgrounds, and a synthetic turf athletic field. Additionally, the school will showcase public art honoring Malcolm X, including a life-sized statue.
This modernization is part of a broader initiative by the Bowser Administration, which has committed to investing in public education throughout the District. Malcolm X Elementary is one of eight schools slated for modernization or expansion by the 2026-2027 school year. Since 2015, the District has allocated $468 million for school projects in Ward 8, underscoring a significant investment in the local education system.
The ceremony will take place at Malcolm X Elementary School, located at 1500 Mississippi Avenue SE. Residents interested in attending the event are encouraged to RSVP to the Office of the Mayor. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live on the mayor’s official website and various social media platforms.
