Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to celebrate the completion of a $67 million modernization project at Malcolm X Elementary School in Ward 8 on Monday, September 21, at 11 am. The event will also feature Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, the eldest daughter of Malcolm X, along with leaders from the DC Department of General Services (DGS) and DC Public Schools (DCPS).
The newly modernized Malcolm X Elementary School is significantly larger than its predecessor, now encompassing 85,000 square feet. The improved facility includes expanded early childhood education classrooms, modern general classrooms, specialized STEAM spaces, a new gymnasium, and a library. Additionally, the school features outdoor learning areas, playgrounds, and a synthetic turf athletic field. Notably, public art honoring Malcolm X will be showcased, including a life-size statue.
This modernization is part of a broader initiative by the Bowser Administration, with Malcolm X Elementary being one of eight schools slated for modernization or expansion for the 2026-2027 school year. Since 2015, the District has invested $468 million in educational projects within Ward 8, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance public education in the area.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the school located at 1500 Mississippi Avenue SE. Residents interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP.
