A 30-year-old convicted felon from Bowie, Maryland, has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a loaded firearm in the District of Columbia, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Tyzell Myrick, who was on supervised release following a previous conviction for a violent robbery, pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.
The sentencing, which occurred on June 12, 2026, was presided over by U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras. In addition to the prison term, Myrick will serve three years of supervised release. Federal prosecutors had recommended a longer sentence of 41 months, highlighting the seriousness of the offense.
The incident that led to the sentencing took place on August 17, 2025, when Metropolitan Police officers patrolling near a gas station on Florida Avenue NW observed Myrick walking with what appeared to be a firearm visible in his pants. When the officers approached, Myrick attempted to evade them but was stopped and subsequently arrested. A loaded Glock 22 .40 caliber pistol was recovered, containing one round in the chamber and an additional 20 rounds in its magazine.
At the time of his arrest, Myrick was already on supervised release for a previous conviction related to a gunpoint robbery at a GameStop in Maryland. In that case, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland had sentenced him to a total of 90 months in prison for various charges, including brandishing a firearm during the robbery.
This case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Washington Field Office. The prosecution was part of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative, which aims to enhance law enforcement efforts against gun violence and prioritize federal firearms violations.
