Motorists in the District of Columbia should prepare for significant traffic changes this weekend as Howard University hosts its annual Homecoming festivities on October 16 and 17, 2026. The DC Metropolitan Police Department has announced a series of street closures and parking restrictions to accommodate the expected influx of attendees.

Starting at 4:00 AM on Friday, October 16, several streets will be designated as Emergency No Parking zones until 11:59 PM on Saturday, October 17. These include sections of 6th Street, Girard Street, Fairmont Street, Howard Place, and Georgia Avenue. Motorists are advised to seek alternative parking solutions during this period.

In addition to the parking restrictions, multiple streets will be closed to vehicle traffic. From 4:00 AM on Friday through 11:59 PM on Saturday, sections of 6th Street, Girard Street, Fairmont Street, and Howard Place will be off-limits to vehicles. On Saturday, closures will extend from 9:30 AM to 11:00 PM, although local traffic and residents will still have access to their homes via Georgia Avenue and Florida Avenue.

Residents and visitors are urged to plan their travel routes accordingly as the festivities are expected to draw large crowds. The police department emphasizes the importance of following posted signs and regulations during this busy weekend to ensure safety for everyone involved.
