(Washington, DC) – In a vibrant celebration of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced the launch of the DC250 Mural Project. This citywide public art initiative, coordinated by the Department of Public Works (DPW) through its renowned MuralsDC program, aims to create eight new murals across all eight wards of the District, highlighting the unique history and character of each neighborhood.
“Public art is a fantastic way to celebrate our country’s semiquincentennial – through art, we can share our stories, celebrate our shared values, and inspire future generations,” said Mayor Bowser during the announcement. The murals will serve not only as artistic expressions but also as reflections of the people, places, and cultures that contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the nation’s capital.
Each mural will be crafted by a local artist, chosen for their artistic vision and deep ties to the communities they represent. The first mural is currently being painted at 1335 H Street NE, with additional locations set to include iconic spots such as Ben’s Chili Bowl in Ward 1, Blagden Alley in Ward 2, the Shrimp Boat complex in Ward 7, and the Southeast Tennis Learning Center in Ward 8. More details about other locations and participating artists will be revealed as the project progresses.
Anthony Crispino, Interim Director of DPW, emphasized the importance of the MuralsDC program, which has transformed District corridors into vibrant works of art since its inception in 2007. “The DC250 Mural Project continues that tradition by bringing together local artists, property owners, and residents to reflect on our nation’s history while celebrating the unique voices and stories found in every corner of the District,” he stated.
As part of broader initiatives commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, the DC250 Mural Project promises to create lasting landmarks that honor both the founding of the nation and the diverse communities that shape its future. Residents can look forward to witnessing these artistic expressions that encapsulate the spirit of Washington, DC, in the coming weeks.
