WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dartanian Owens, a 22-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison for a series of carjackings and armed robberies that took place between April 6-8, 2025. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, as Owens faced multiple charges, including carjacking, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, robbery, and carrying a pistol without a license.
Owens was apprehended following a violent crime spree in Northeast and Southeast Washington. On the early morning of April 6, he carjacked a victim delivering food for DoorDash in Northeast D.C. The following day, he used the stolen vehicle to commit three armed robberies in Southeast D.C. In one incident, Owens approached a man waiting at a bus stop and threatened him with a pink and silver handgun, demanding his belongings. He continued his crime spree shortly after, robbing two more victims at gunpoint while they were en route to work.
On April 8, 2025, law enforcement in Prince George’s County located the carjacked vehicle in a McDonald’s parking lot. Owens fled from the police, leading them on a high-speed chase through both Maryland and D.C. The pursuit ended when police used spike strips to disable the vehicle, prompting Owens to jump out while it was still moving. After a brief foot chase, he was apprehended, during which he provided a false identity to officers. A handgun was recovered along his flight path, along with a key fob belonging to the stolen vehicle.
Owens has remained in custody since his arrest on April 8, 2025, and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Andrea Herzfeld, who declined to apply the Youth Rehabilitation Act in his case. The investigation was conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force, with assistance from other officers and detectives. Assistant United States Attorney Eliot Folsom prosecuted the case, highlighting the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat carjackings and enhance public safety in the District.
