WASHINGTON, D.C. – James Callen, a 42-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 20.5 years in prison on Tuesday for a brutal stabbing incident involving his then-romantic partner. The sentencing took place in D.C. Superior Court, following a conviction for multiple counts of assault, including assault with intent to kill while armed and aggravated assault. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the ruling, emphasizing the seriousness of domestic violence in the community.
According to court documents, the violent encounter occurred on July 13, 2024, at Callen’s brother’s apartment in Southeast Washington. After an argument regarding the victim’s reluctance to move in with him, Callen retrieved a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the victim multiple times, inflicting serious injuries, including a laceration to her jugular vein. The victim was able to survive thanks to prompt medical attention after Callen called 911 in a panic. However, he misled police upon their arrival, claiming the victim had arrived at the apartment already injured.
Callen’s history of violence against the victim was presented during the trial, revealing a pattern of abuse. Prior incidents included breaking her leg in August 2023 and giving her black eyes in January 2024. Following his arrest, Callen violated a court order by making numerous calls to the victim from D.C. Jail, attempting to manipulate her perception of the events surrounding the attack.
U.S. Attorney Pirro highlighted the importance of breaking the cycle of domestic violence, stating, “James Callen’s brutality nearly cost this woman her life, and but for the grace of God, she survived.” The sentencing serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat domestic violence in the District. Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department commended the investigators involved in the case, recognizing the collaborative efforts that led to the conviction.
This case underscores the critical need for continued vigilance and support for victims of domestic violence in Washington, D.C., as the community works together to ensure safety and justice for all residents.
