The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a homicide that occurred on July 11, 2026, in Northwest Washington, D.C. The victim, identified as 56-year-old Charles Sharp, was fatally stabbed in the 2900 block of 14th Street, Northwest. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 12:52 a.m. and found Sharp suffering from a stab wound. Despite the efforts of D.C. Fire and EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
On September 6, 2026, MPD officers apprehended the suspect, 25-year-old Andrew Tyree Richardson, also of Northwest D.C. The arrest took place around 9:43 a.m. while officers were attempting to take Richardson into custody. During the incident, a dog from a neighboring residence charged at the officers, prompting one officer to utilize an electronic control device (ECD). When that attempt failed, another officer discharged their service weapon, resulting in the dog being struck and subsequently dying from its injuries. Fortunately, no officers or the suspect were harmed during the encounter.
Richardson faces serious charges, including Second Degree Murder while Armed, Burglary in the First Degree, and Possession of a BB Gun. These charges stem from two separate incidents, with the murder charge linked to the stabbing of Sharp. The MPD has stated that body-worn camera footage related to the officer-involved shooting will be released in accordance with D.C. law.
The incident involving the officer-involved shooting is currently under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team, which is responsible for examining all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District.
