The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a traffic fatality involving a bicyclist that occurred in Northwest on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The incident took place around 3:24 p.m. at the intersection of 15th and M Streets, where two adult male bicyclists were involved in a collision.
Upon arrival, police officers found one of the cyclists with minor injuries while the other was in critical condition. DC Fire and EMS transported the critically injured individual to a local hospital for treatment. According to preliminary investigations, a fixed-gear bicyclist was traveling westbound on M Street when he passed through a solid red light and entered the intersection. At the same time, a rider on a Capitol Bikeshare electric bicycle was proceeding southbound with a green traffic signal. The two cyclists collided, resulting in both being ejected from their bicycles.
Tragically, on Monday, September 21, 2026, the operator of the Capitol Bikeshare electric bicycle, identified as 59-year-old David Watts of Northwest D.C., succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
