The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is investigating a tragic pedestrian fatality that occurred in Northeast Washington, DC, early Monday morning. The incident took place around 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Bladensburg Road and South Dakota Avenue, an area frequented by both vehicles and pedestrians.
According to MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit, Fifth District officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult female suffering from serious injuries in a nearby park. Despite the prompt response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the victim was pronounced dead at the scene after showing no signs of life.
The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Shana Battle, a resident of Laurel, Maryland. Preliminary investigations indicate that an Audi Q7 was traveling southbound on South Dakota Avenue when it veered off the road into the park area situated between Franklin Street and Bladensburg Road. In the process, the vehicle struck Battle. The driver fled the scene on foot prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
