The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is actively investigating a tragic pedestrian fatality that occurred in Southwest Washington, D.C. The incident took place on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m., at the intersection of 14th Street and Independence Avenue, SW.
According to reports, officers from the United States Park Police (USPP) responded to the scene after receiving a call about a collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult female suffering from serious injuries in the roadway. She was subsequently transported by a USPP helicopter to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian, identified as 79-year-old Virginia Voight from Palmyra, New Jersey, was traveling eastbound in the north crosswalk on a motorized electric mobility scooter. At that moment, a white 2016 Ford F-150, driven by 55-year-old Michael Wayne Mills of Germantown, Maryland, was traveling westbound on Independence Avenue and made a right turn onto 14th Street, striking Voight. Mills reportedly continued to drive until he was detained by a member of the National Guard until law enforcement arrived.
Mills was arrested at the scene and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs, as well as Leaving After Colliding. Unfortunately, on July 12, 2026, Voight succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Additional charges against Mills are pending as the investigation continues.
