Shooting on the Grounds of Watkins Elementary School Yields 32 Years in Prison for D.C. Man

Antonio Hawley, a 23-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for the shooting death of 26-year-old Aaron Wiggins. The incident occurred on the sports field of Watkins Elementary School during a flag football scrimmage in October 2021. The sentencing was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized the tragic outcome of the rivalry, stating, “A flag football rivalry ended in murder. Antonio Hawley fired 17 shots at Aaron Wiggins and killed him.” Pirro remarked on the profound impact of such violence, noting that no family should endure the loss of a loved one to senseless acts of aggression.

Hawley was convicted on February 3, 2026, of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license. The court heard that during the game, tensions rose after Wiggins caught the winning touchdown. Following the match, Hawley retrieved a handgun from a teammate’s bag and approached Wiggins, firing 17 shots and striking him 13 times, resulting in Wiggins’ death at the scene.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department, and U.S. Attorney Pirro, along with Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll, commended the efforts of the investigators involved. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jin Park and Mark Levy were recognized for their role in prosecuting the case.
