District Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Possessing Stolen, Loaded Firearm While on Supervision for Multiple Prior Offenses

Rayvon Applewhite, a 33-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history, was sentenced to 26 months in federal prison for possessing a stolen, loaded firearm while on supervised release for multiple prior offenses, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Applewhite, a convicted felon, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in June.

The incident leading to the sentencing occurred on July 14, 2025, when officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s 5th District Crime Suppression Team spotted Applewhite in a residential area experiencing a rise in violent crime. Officers observed suspicious behavior when Applewhite adjusted his waistband, prompting them to approach him. Upon attempting to detain him, Applewhite resisted, leading to a protective pat-down that resulted in the discovery of a loaded 9 mm Taurus pistol, reported stolen from East Point, Georgia.

At the time of his arrest, Applewhite was under supervision for three separate matters and had an extensive criminal record that included prior convictions for conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a loaded handgun, and second-degree cruelty to children. This incident marked Applewhite’s fourth firearm-related offense.

The investigation was conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Washington Field Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Lee as part of an initiative aimed at addressing violent crime in the district by prioritizing the federal prosecution of armed repeat offenders and removing illegal firearms from local neighborhoods.
