WASHINGTON, D.C. – Cordell Simms, a 32-year-old convicted felon residing in the District of Columbia, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentencing, which comes in light of Simms’ ongoing period of supervised release that prohibited him from possessing any firearms.
Simms pleaded guilty on October 23, 2025, before Judge Emmet G. Sullivan to a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. In addition to his prison sentence, Judge Sullivan ordered Simms to serve three years of supervised release after completing his incarceration.
The incident leading to Simms’ arrest occurred on September 10, 2025, when a Metropolitan Police officer responded to reports of an individual with a firearm near the intersection of 2nd and Farragut Streets NW. Upon arriving, the officer identified Simms, who was seen handing his backpack to a minor child before attempting to flee the scene. The officer quickly intercepted the child and instructed her to drop the backpack, while Simms led police on a foot chase before being apprehended.
Upon inspection of the backpack, law enforcement recovered a loaded Ruger SR40 .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, which had an obliterated serial number and was fitted with a laser sight. A check of Simms’ criminal history revealed previous convictions for attempted assault with a dangerous weapon, resulting in an 18-month prison sentence, further establishing his prohibited status regarding firearm possession. At the time of his arrest, Simms was also on supervised release for prior convictions, including simple assault and second-degree theft.
This case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Washington Field Office. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney George Eliopoulos from the Violent Crime and Narcotics Trafficking Section, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to combat illegal firearm possession in the District.
